A bathroom remodel gets judged the moment you walk in and see the shower, which is why the walk-in showers in our photos get the most attention — large-format, marble-look tile, set clean and flat, no dated fiberglass insert in sight. That's our own completed work, not a catalog picture, and it's the standard we build every shower to, whether it ends up on the site or not.

Before any tile goes up, the shower area gets waterproofed properly — a membrane or pan system built to keep water inside the shower and out of the framing behind it. That step doesn't show in the finished photo, but it's the difference between a shower that lasts and one that's rotting a wall from the inside in five years without anyone knowing until the drywall in the next room goes soft.

Large-format tile, the kind in our showers, needs a flatter substrate than small tile does, because there's no grout line every few inches to hide a dip. We plan the layout before the first piece is cut, so seams land where they should and you're not left with a sliver of tile in the corner where your eye goes first.
